Description
No. 10 Priory Street is a Georgian-fronted townhouse with origins that predate its current style. The building is constructed of stone, with a stucco render that is slightly scored and painted on the front. It features raised quoins and window surrounds, a shallow-pitched slate roof with overhanging, slightly swept eaves, and brick end stacks. The house is double-fronted and three storeys tall, displaying a two-window range of wide windows set in reveals with moulded architraves and keystones. The top floor has 12-pane casements, while the first and ground floors feature 16-pane sash windows.
The entrance is located centre-right and includes a doorway topped by a bracketed hipped slate-roofed hood adorned with a zigzag frieze and a swept metal arch, similar to those found on houses across the street. The door itself is a six-panelled design. A deep plinth runs along the base of the building. There is a notably wider area between the windows and the left quoins to accommodate an earlier chimney; during restoration, the left side elevation revealed rubble construction where a lean-to had been removed. The property is also enclosed by iron railings on a stone kerb, featuring fleur-de-lys finials and double gates that extend across the front.
At the rear, there is a lower Victorian cross wing with a cantered bay to the south and a further extension under construction to the north.
Inside, the ground floor features chamfered and stopped cross beams with tenons for screens on either side of the former passage. To the right, the ceiling has chamfered and stopped joists, while the left side is plastered. All the timberwork is unstained. There is a large open fireplace on the left with a deep timber lintel that is keyed. A spiral staircase is located beside the fireplace but was under repair at the time of inspection. A recess in the rear wall has a wide splay to the left and an inset cupboard to the right. There is also a narrow lobby to the right and a wide boarded side door. Some original shutters, panelled reveals, and door surrounds with paterae have been retained.
On the first floor, further chamfered and stopped cross beams are present throughout, with the main room to the left featuring an open fireplace with a large timber lintel. Purlins are visible in the second-floor rooms.
