Description

The Royal Hotel is a late Georgian house that has been converted into a hotel. It is constructed of painted brick and features a shallow pitched hipped slate roof with long narrow brick end stacks. The building stands three storeys high and includes a cellar, with an L-shaped plan. The façade has a three-window range of sash windows set in reveals, with 9 panes on the top floor and 12 panes on the first and ground floors on the left side.

The central entrance is a round-headed doorway with a moulded surround, featuring a six-panelled door and a fanlight with radial glazing. To the right of the entrance, there are two shallow bow windows with 20 panes each, positioned beside another doorway that has a six-panelled door, narrow fluted pilasters, a rectangular overlight with diamond glazing bars, and a continuous fascia. The building has a plinth and a long rear range that likely served as former stables.

Inside, the hotel has two bars and retains several original features, including moulded plaster arches, one of which is located behind the bar and has a glazed roundel. There are shelved alcoves and cupboards on either side of the fireplace. The doors are four and six-panelled with surrounds, and some have shutters. A notable feature is the cast-iron quadripartite stove set in the rear left fireplace, which includes three small ovens and an open grate, finished with green enamel and yellow tiles, and marked 'Yorkist Major'. The staircase hall is located at the rear, and the staircase itself has decorative treads, a wreathed and ramped handrail, and stick balusters, ascending through two storeys.
