Description
Llancayo House is a country house dating from the 18th century, exhibiting group value as a significant local building. The exterior is colourwashed roughcast, with a graded slate roof featuring a valley, hipped angles at the southwest and northwest corners, and paired gables to the east end. A deep eaves cornice with bracketed panels runs around the entire building. Four brick end stacks are visible. The south garden front has five windows, the rear north front has four, and the east entrance front has three.
The south front is plain and symmetrical, with sash windows; the ground floor windows have 12 panes, the first floor windows 9, and the upper floor windows 6. A stone plinth, angle quoins, sills, and a sill band are present. The central ground floor window is a blank feature with a curved back. A stone flag pavement is located in front of the building.
The east entrance front mirrors the lower elements of the south front but includes decorative blank panels in the outer bays, adorned with small lunettes in small pedimental gables above the cornice. The central bay features arched panels on both the ground and first floors, with a large 15-pane sash window recessed in the centre of the first floor, opening onto a porch balcony. The top floor presents square panels with a recessed 6-pane sash window at the centre. A substantial columned porch features baseless, unfluted Doric columns, pilaster responds, a cornice, and an iron balcony. Within the porch, an arched doorway leads to a six-panel door with a metal-traceried fanlight and panelled reveals.
The rear north side has similar eaves, quoins, and a sill band to the other facades, but a rubble plinth is present. Sash windows are consistent with those on the south front, with 9-pane windows on the top floor and 12-pane windows elsewhere, all with stone sills. A particularly attractive semi-circular bow window with three 15-pane curved sashes is present on the ground floor left side. An adjoining bay features a six-panel door beneath a deep overlight with an oval pattern of thin metal tracery, set within a timber, pedimented frame with fluted pilasters. A timber shelf hood is situated between the door and overlight. A basement door, accessed by stone steps, is located to the right.
The west end exhibits quoins, a sill band, and eaves. A 12-pane sash window is centred on both upper floors. Two parallel, single-storey service ranges extend westwards from the ground floor.
The service ranges have graded slate roofs and hipped west gables; an arched doorway is situated centrally between them. The south face includes a door, two blank windows, two triple casement windows, a door, and a 16-pane window, all with stone sills. Within the enclosed court, the north side of the north range has a door on either side of a triple casement window, while the south side has three doors. The north face of the north range includes a 20-pane sash window, a blocked door, another blocked door with an inserted window, two square triple casement windows, a door, and an additional 20-pane sash window.
A short length of roughcast coped wall extends from the northeast corner of the house to two sandstone ashlar gate piers with cornices and caps.
Inside, a cross passage extends from the east entrance behind the garden front rooms to the west end stair. The passage floor is stone flagged with an inner door at the east end, featuring a large metal-traceried fanlight and panelled side pieces. Six-panel doors are present. A stick baluster stair with a simple moulded rail rises in six flights to the attic, with scrolled tread ends. Panelled shutters are fitted to the main rooms, and fireplaces are of a Regency style, featuring paterae.
