Description
This barn is a substantial, symmetrical building dating from the 18th century, constructed of rubble stone with a corrugated iron hipped roof. The design is notably grand, featuring three large arched entries on each side, each framed by a segmental arch of red brick. The roof extends to cover projecting porches at each end of the south front, and a full-height hipped porch in the middle of the north front (though the slate roof covering of this porch was removed in 1980). Between the arched entries are double rows of vent loops, with one on the north side altered to an opening.
The north porch has low doors flanked by timber lintels and brick relieving arches. The piers of the front wall supporting the central porch are splayed outwards at the base.
A later range has been added to the west, also built of rubble stone with a corrugated iron roof. This range is lofted and features a door and window on the right end of the south front, and a window and door on the upper level. These openings have brick heads.
Inside, the barn has an undivided interior with 12 tie-beam trusses, each supported by a centre post and wishbone struts. There are two similar trusses in the north porch. A loft door is located in the west end wall. The added west range has its floor removed and incorporates two heavy beams and two bolted tie-beam and collar trusses. A window is situated on each floor in the west end wall.
