Description
Hill Farmhouse is a rendered house, likely built over local sandstone rubble, which is visible in the kitchen wing. It features a natural slate roof. The main front of the house has three bays and shows signs of age with a distinct batter to the lower walls and a slight bell-cast to the roof. The central entrance includes a six-panel door topped with a timber segmental hood. On either side of the entrance are early 19th-century sash windows with 8 over 8 panes, while the upper floor has three smaller windows with 3 over 6 pane sashes. The roof is plain, with rubble stacks at both ends; the stack on the right gable dates from the 17th century. The right gable has a semi-circular bread oven where the original entrance door was located, and the left gable is blind. The rear elevation features an early 21st-century extension, alongside an earlier block, likely from the 18th century, which contains the current kitchen and connects to the modern extension. This earlier block has plain windows, a plank door, and a large brick stack.
In the early 19th century, the layout of the original block was altered to include a central staircase, which is plain and enclosed on both sides, with an arched entrance. The large living room fireplace has been reopened and features a wooden beam, along with an exposed bread oven. The rear kitchen has a rough beam ceiling and connects to the extension with similar modern beams. The upper floor consists of three small rooms, and the principal rafter roof is mostly concealed.
