Description
The Corn Mill is a water-driven corn mill built from random red sandstone and conglomerate rubble, topped with a Welsh slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and has an L-shaped plan, featuring a symmetrical hipped roof facing the road and another asymmetrical hipped roof towards the mill-leat and head-race. The front range likely served as the miller's house, while the rear wing functioned as the grinding mill. Although the elevation facing the road appears to be two storeys, there is a room beneath the left side, creating a double depth plan.
A central plank door with an elliptical head is flanked by 6 over 6 pane casement windows, also with elliptical heads set in cut stone lintels. There is another window below and three more on the floor above. The steeply pitched hipped roof features the only visible chimney located on the rear of the left wall. The right return wall includes an arch for the head race to enter the mill on the left side. A modern building obscures the right side, where two windows similar to those on the front are located above. The left gable has a late 20th-century lean-to that hides the ground floor, with one window matching the others and a smaller addition above, plus a small attic window.
The rear elevation, which is fully three storeys, has late 20th-century joinery. The mill appears to have had both external and internal wheels based on the arrangement of the leats. The interior was not inspected during the resurvey, but evidence from the head-race suggests it had a wide overshot wheel running parallel to the front range, as well as an external breast-shot wheel at the right rear.
