Description
Tal-y-bont Mill is a two-storey, water-powered corn mill built in an L-shaped plan. It is made of mortared rubble masonry, featuring large stones as quoins and lintels, and has a hipped roof covered with small slates that includes two-paned skylights. The L plan is inverted, with the longer range oriented northwest to southeast and the shorter range extending to the southwest. An overshot waterwheel, supplied by a mill race that branches off the Afon Ysgethin, is located at the northwest corner of the building, at the northern end of the long range. Access to the mill is through a double boarded doorway situated in the angle to the southeast. There is a small casement window on each floor next to the doorway, with the first-floor window positioned beneath the eaves. Similar windows are found at the rear and in the southwest wing.
The mill retains many original roof timbers, including collared trusses, and much of the original machinery, such as drive wheels, hoppers, and the main axle tree along with associated cog wheels.
