Description
Celynen is a house constructed from local rubblestone, with some areas rendered in the extension, and features a batter on the original part, topped with a Welsh slate roof. The original cottage consists of a two-room block with one and a half storeys, which includes two late 20th-century casement windows, with the upper ones set in dormers; these windows are 3 + 3 pane casements. There is a central door that provides side entry to the hall, and a late 20th-century rebuilt gabled porch. A brick stack is located on the right-hand gable, while the left gable features a 19th-century three-light casement on each floor. The right gable has a late 20th-century lean-to covering the ground floor, which includes two small casement windows, with the gable above being blind. The rear elevation has a two-storey wing attached, leading to a two-storey gabled wing at right angles, along with two additional single-storey additions, all of which are from the late 20th century.
Inside, the hall preserves its post-and-panel partitioning and cross beams, although the joists have been renewed. The fireplace is characterized by monolith jambs and a chamfered oak lintel, and there is a firestair with the original plank door. The upper floor was rebuilt in the 1980s, and the upper floor partition, as documented by Fox and Raglan, had already been removed by the time of listing in 1980.
