Description

This is a hotel dating from the 18th century, exhibiting classical detailing. The exterior is of black and white painted stucco, topped with a steep-pitched slate roof featuring overhanging eaves to the gable end and a roof dormer. Tall rendered stacks with painted decorative bracketed cornices are situated on the left side. The long, asymmetrical frontage is marked by raised and painted platbands, narrow Tuscan pilasters (some double), wider end pilasters, painted eared architraves and keystones to the openings, and a plinth. Most of the windows are 12-pane sashes, although some are 8-pane. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a cellar beneath. A narrow, projecting porch bay, rising to a decorative gabled half dormer, is centrally positioned; below, a ground floor segmental arched entrance features raised lettering and a recessed door with overlight. To the left, a two-window range of sashes is present on each floor. To the right, paired 8-pane sashes sit under the eaves above a canted ground floor bay window. An end unit, where the windows are at a different level, features a similar bay window and smaller sashes, one adjacent and three above, two of which are paired. The side elevation displays a three-storey gable end with a two-window range of similar sashes, painted surrounds and bands, where the two first floor windows have heavier hoodmoulds and stops, and a round-arched ground floor window. A cross wing is attached, fronting onto Bridge Street, with a two-window range of wide sashes to the first floor and smaller casements to the ground floor, along with roof dormers.

The main function rooms are located on the first floor. The Apprentice Room retains a fireplace with paterae decoration. The Bridge Bar has a carved wooden fireplace with caryatids. The Lantern Room features a billet-moulded cornice and a central roof lantern. In the room now used as a restaurant there is an altered fireplace with chamfered stone sides.
