Description
Old School and Schoolhouse in Magor, Newport, is a single-storey building primarily constructed of red sandstone that is roughly dressed and coursed, featuring an ashlar bellcote, copings, and some window and door surrounds, with some painted and others in yellow brick. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has deep dentilled verges on the eastern schoolroom, along with decorative end ridge tiles. The structure consists of parallel gabled wings for the classroom, hall, and house, which are connected by a cross wing.
The south elevation showcases a gable with an apex stone and kneelers, along with a large segmental pointed arched window that has a hoodmould and Perpendicular tracery with a transom. The matching gable supports a bellcote that features a trefoil bell opening and a quatrefoil above. The cross wing has windows with pointed lights set within rectangular frames, with the central window being larger and positioned under a dentilled gable. Other gothic details are present in the windows and doorway, while the schoolroom windows are simpler cambered arches.
The schoolhouse is two storeys tall, featuring coped cross gables and two substantial stacks, one of which has a moulded cornice. The interior, which has been partly refurbished, retains some original panelling and dado rails.
