Description
Porth-y-carn is a villa built in a classical style. It features a stucco-rendered exterior with a shallow-pitched slate roof behind a corniced parapet and tall, long, narrow corniced rendered cross-ridge stacks. The building has a near rectangular plan, consisting of a main block with an entrance porch and a narrower, lower side wing to the left. It stands two storeys high.
The main block has a three-window range of 12-pane sashes with narrow glazing bars on the first floor, and a tripartite arrangement on the ground floor under a moulded bracketed hood, with slightly advanced side bays. There are two steps leading up to the central porch, which has a heavy entablature and Doric columns in antis, created by engraving the stucco. The porch features a very large doorcase with double 4-panelled doors, margin lights, and a large overlight with margin-type glazing, along with a stone flagged floor. To the left is the two-storey side wing, which has a two-window range.
The rear elevation facing the river is similarly designed to the front, except for the doorway, which has a shallow moulded surround with paired pilasters on either side and an entablature featuring wreathed motifs, leading to a recessed 4-panelled door. The northern elevation includes large 12-pane windows on the ground floor and smaller ones above, with a blind centre.
The villa is said to retain contemporary furnishings, including 6-panelled doors, moulded surrounds with paterae, shutters, panelled reveals, shelved recesses, moulded plaster cornices, and marble fireplaces.
