Description
The Tythe Barn is a long, low barn constructed from thin coursed sandstone rubble and features partly timber cruck construction, topped with a natural slate roof. The north end of the barn has 19th-century embellishments, including a gable with bargeboard on the west side, but this section does not extend south from the through carriageway. The entrance is on the east side, facing the yard, and includes four doors and eight windows, all of which are modern casements of various types. The north end wall has been rebuilt and features two brick relieving arches for doorways that have been blocked. There is also a blocked cart entrance at No. 2 and two slit vents at No. 1.
The elevation facing the road consists of the gardens of the houses, with the walling altered to include various modern doors and windows, along with additional slit vents. The interior is not available for inspection but is reported to be partly of cruck construction with upper crucks. The barn is part of a group of four buildings known as Nos. 1-4 The Tythe Barn on Chapel Lane.
