Description
The Grotto, located about 30 meters southeast of Dewstow House, is a 19th-century structure approached from the north via cement steps that lead through a rough artificial stone arch. From the south, visitors enter through a small, roughly circular rockwork area featuring two pools set in an artificial rock floor, with no roof overhead.
Descending steps from ground level lead to another rough arch, which opens into a winding passage lined with artificial rockwork. The floor of this passage contains a narrow rill that widens into a pool in the central chamber. This area lacks top lighting, relying instead on occasional holes in the roof to allow a small amount of light to enter, making it otherwise completely dark. The grotto includes side chambers adorned with fantastic forms and stalactites.
