Description

The Design and Technology Centre at Monmouth Boys School is a building constructed from coursed rock-faced red sandstone rubble, featuring Bath and Forest of Dean stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. It is designed in a more elaborate Elizabethan style than the adjacent School House, while still being carefully matched to it. The structure consists of three storeys above a basement, with an additional single storey section.

The river-facing elevation showcases a prominent three-bay feature with pilasters separating the bays. The ground floor includes single light windows with transoms, while the first floor has a central 2-light window flanked by single light windows. The second floor mirrors this arrangement, but the outer windows are designed to appear as 2-light windows, with the outer lights being blind. The top floor features an intricate design in Forest stone, complete with an apron, windows, octagonal pinnacles on either side, and a central coat-of-arms, all of which project forward from the main wall and roof. The building is topped with tall multi-flued stacks, and there is an octagonal corner turret on the right with a pepperpot roof and a castellated parapet.

The top floor again displays an elaborate Forest stone design, including niches and coats-of-arms, with single light windows below. A single bay of 3-light windows facing Wyebridge Street connects the turret to the older School House, which also features a castellated parapet. On the river front, there is a single storey laboratory addition that includes a 6-light mullion-and-transom window.

The elevation facing the inner quadrangle is similar to the river front, featuring 2 and 3-light windows, a castellated parapet, gables, and additional multi-flued stacks. The interior has not been inspected during the resurvey, but it is noted to be both altered and utilitarian, as is typical for schools in active use.
