Description
The building is a block situated between the Library and the Almshouses, known as the William Jones Room, part of Monmouth Boys School. It was constructed from coursed rock-faced red sandstone rubble, featuring Forest of Dean stone dressings and Welsh slate roofs. Designed in a Jacobean style, it complements the adjoining Almshouses and the nearby school buildings. The structure has two storeys facing Almshouse Street, while part of it is single storey around the inner quadrangle.
The street elevation consists of six bays separated by buttresses with offsets, featuring stepped gables on bays 1, 3, and 5. Bay 1 includes a doorway with a gabled porch and a Tudor arch head, along with a 3-light mullion-and-transom window in the gable above. Bays 2, 4, and 6 have 3-light mullion-and-transom windows on the ground floor and plain 3-light windows above, while bays 3 and 5 feature 3-light mullion-and-transom windows on both floors.
The elevation facing the quadrangle reveals a second range behind the street elevation, which connects to the existing buildings. This section is L-shaped in plan and includes a four-bay cloister with Tudor arches, gables featuring quatrefoil vents, and finials above. There are two additional bays at right angles that form a porch leading to the older building, accessed through a large room with a 4-light mullion-and-transom window and a canted bay, each side featuring a 3-light mullion-and-transom window, with all top lights having 4-centred heads. The building has a parapet and a French pavilion roof with finials above the bay. Additionally, there is a resited K6 telephone call box located next to the left end of the cloister.
The interior of the building has been altered and is utilitarian, typical for schools in use. The interior of the William Jones Room was not inspected during the resurvey.
