Description
Castle Terrace comprises a row of Georgian houses, numbers 33a to 47 inclusive, located on Bridge Street. The terrace is built on a slope, rising towards the town centre from the Wye Bridge. Each house is single-fronted, with three storeys above a cellar. They each feature a single window on each floor. The walls are rendered in scored and painted roughcast, with slate roofs and narrow brick stacks marking the divisions between the houses. The upper-floor windows are generally 3/6-pane sashes set within reveals. First-floor windows are typically 6/6-pane sashes. Ground-floor windows are generally segmental bows with small panes, and incorporate fixed sections with single-pane opening lights. Deep plinths are present below the windows. The front doors are panelled and set within wooden door cases, some with rectangular overlights. Shallow wooden hoods, supported by brackets and often decorated with fretwork, shelter the doors. The terrace presents a symmetrical appearance despite variations in detail and dimensions between the individual houses. Some houses have had their original bow windows replaced with paired sashes.
