Description
The lychgate to the parish church is a Grade II listed structure built with a timber frame on a rubble stone base. It features low rubble stone side walls with battered returns at each end, topped with sandstone coping. Inside, there are wooden benches and paired oak front gates that have a top rail that ramps down. The upper part of the gate is made of oak and includes paired posts on each side; the outer posts have brackets that support the bargeboards, while the inner posts flank a Tudor-arched lintel with a pendant under a brattished collar beam.
An inscription on the front reads, "Teach me to live that I may dread the grave as little as my bed," and on the rear, it states, "Teach me to die that I may rise glorious at the awful day." Above, the open framing is supported by a row of seven curved brackets that carry a jettied moulded collar and studding, along with bargeboards and a pendant. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The sides of the lychgate have vertical studs with small spandrel pieces, and two longitudinal arch braces inside support the rafter roof and the central collar truss.
