Description
Llandowlais Farmhouse is a two-storey house that has been completely rendered and whitewashed, likely over local rubblestone, and features Welsh slate roofs with unusually large slates. The building is a long rectangular block that consists of at least two separate constructions and includes two rear wings: one centrally located and one to the left when viewed from the front.
The main block has three windows and a central entrance, which is a gabled porch featuring an 18th-century four-panel door. To the left of the entrance is a three-over-three pane casement window, and to the right is a French casement. Above the entrance, there is a three-over-three casement window set in an elliptical head to the left, along with two smaller three-over-three casements: one above the porch, which is not centrally located, and one at the far right. The roof has a moderate pitch and includes brick stacks at either end.
To the right of the main block is a one-bay addition that has a door and a window below, as well as a window above, both of which are three-over-three casements. It is evident from the left jamb of the doorway that this was the original house quoin. There is another brick stack on the right gable. The single-storey addition to the right has a plain door and a three-over-three casement window below, with a blocked opening above. This extension is blind at the rear.
The main house features a projecting gabled wing with windows in the returns but no chimney, consisting of three-over-three casements. Following this is a small section of rear wall with a single-storey lean-to. Finally, there is a two-storey wing that has a door below and a three-light casement above, which is covered by a lean-to roof and also lacks a chimney.
While not available for inspection during the resurvey, it appears that the farmhouse has a three-room plan with a separate hall, and the staircase is likely located in the rear wing.
