Description

Griffin House is a Later Georgian townhouse, built in the 18th century. It is attached to buildings on both sides. The walls are rendered with a stucco finish, emphasising the joints between the blocks, and topped by a slate roof with a decorative wooden eaves cornice. The house is three storeys high and has a symmetrical facade with a two-window arrangement. The windows are 12-pane sashes with thick glazing bars, with a wider, tripartite window on the ground floor to the left. A semi-circular doorway, approached by two steps, is located on the right, leading to a six-panelled door. Above the door is an arched fanlight with radial glazing, and the doorway itself is framed by a wooden surround featuring an open triangular pediment supported by brackets and side pilasters. A deep plinth runs along the base of the building. A large external water cistern is situated at the rear of the property. Inside, the house is said to contain a staircase decorated in a Chinoiserie style, inspired by Chinese decorative art.
