Description

The building is a Workmen’s Hall and Institute, constructed in the 18th century. It is a two-storey building with an attic, set on a rectangular plan and featuring projections to the north, including a caretaker's cottage. The construction is of snecked stone with a mixture of stone and yellow brick dressings, exhibiting eclectic detailing across all facades.

The east facade presents a broad, symmetrical five-bay front, dominated by a large, pedimented gable. A stone plinth is present, along with a series of string courses at ground and first floor levels, and pilaster strips above. A flight of steps leads to the main entrance, which comprises three segmental arched openings, the central one featuring a stone surround with scrolled pediment finials. The first floor has a rectangular, four-light window with stone dressings, which transitions into a smaller two-light window above. These are flanked by windows with segmental brick arches and brick pilaster strips springing from the keystones. A decorated string course marks the attic level within the gable, topped with a single, two-light rectangular window. Pilasters of both brick and stone link the upper floor levels and windows. On the outer two bays, ground and first floor windows are set into tall yellow brickwork panels. The ground floor windows have paired lights with a hood mould, angled stone sill, and panelled apron. The first floor two-light window has a segmental arch, a hood moulding, an angled stone sill, and an upper section inset with stone panelling. Above this, at either end, a stone dressed, corbelled-out attic window with two lights is surmounted by a similarly scrolled pediment with a finial.

The south facade is six bays wide across two storeys, with attics in the two advanced end bays. It features a stone plinth with brick chamfer and five string courses. Fourteen diaper panels of moulded yellow brick run horizontally through the centre of the facade, punctuated by short pilasters running through the gables. Windows have shallow brick arches with ceramic hood mouldings continuous with a string course. Pedimented gables with finials are present on the advanced bays and the central two bays.

The west facade is characterized by a large, pedimented gable with a finial. Below this is a large blind arcade framing a stone panel inscribed with the building’s name and date, decorated with a shell motif. A doorway is located at the south corner, approached by a flight of steps.

The north-west wing is a two-storey structure. The ground floor has a window and a rebuilt glass roof porch. The east and west elevations each have a first floor dressed stone oriel window supported by four brackets, with half-timbered gable ends.

The caretaker's cottage is a three-bay, two-storey building. The east elevation incorporates an advanced central bay containing the entrance and a pedimented gable with a ball finial. Flanked by half-timbered gables with ceramic finials.

The interior has been altered following modern refurbishment.
