Description
Bethlehem Congregational Church, also known as Bethlehem Independent Chapel, is a simple classical style rectangular stone building that features a porch and a later extension. The main gable end elevation is rendered and symmetrical. It has a central porch supported by two rendered Doric columns and two pilasters, all set on large tooled stone bases, which support a flat wooden roof. The entrance consists of double, panelled wooden doors topped by a large semi-circular fanlight, with hood moulding and a keystone. Flanking the door and above it are three round-headed windows, each with rendered stone surrounds, stone sills, and broad continuous hood mouldings. Above the central window, a stone tablet displays the name and date of the chapel. The building has new roof tiles.
The extension to the east has a rendered facade, featuring a door and one small round-headed window, which have similar dressings to the main facade windows. The side of the extension reveals an exposed rubble face, and the lean-to roof is made of corrugated aluminium.
Inside, the galleried interior possibly retains original furnishings. There is a raised dais at the front, with a pulpit that is accessible by two staircases, each with cast iron and wooden balustrades. Eight cast iron pillars support the gallery, which can be reached via one of two staircases in the vestibule. The gallery balcony is adorned with wooden panelling and has a clock inset. A schoolroom is located in the extension.
