Description
St Peter's Church is a Grade II* listed building in the Neo-Gothic style, constructed from coursed quarry-faced stone with dressed stone heads above the pointed arched openings, and features slate roofs. The church has a four-storey west tower that includes band courses, a battlemented parapet, and a pyramidal spire. The belfry openings are louvered, and the west face features an ocular window above a modern UPVC window. There are doorways on the north and south sides, along with four windows on each side of the main body of the nave, which have Y-shaped glazing bars over six square panes. The chancel has two windows and an iron-framed east end window topped with a crucifix finial on the gable parapet. A vestry lean-to is located on the north side, featuring a pointed-arched door and a window on the west.
Inside, the church has an aisled nave supported by a gallery carried on cast-iron pillars, and a decorative wooden panelled ceiling. The baptistry at the west end contains the original cast iron font designed to resemble stone. In the vestibule, wooden stairs lead up to the galleries, and wooden pews are retained throughout the church.
