Description
The building is a Post Office constructed in the Queen Anne Revival style, featuring a deep roof and a rectangular plan with extensions at the rear. It has a symmetrical two-storey main facade with five windows, finished in roughcast render, dressed stone quoins, and a marble plinth. All the windows are square-headed sashes with horned small-pane glazing, and the hipped roof is covered in a distinctive Cumbrian green slate.
On the ground floor, the central doorway is pedimented and features a 'Gibbs Surround', with the keystone inscribed 'GR 1937'. The six-panel wooden door includes a rectangular fanlight with decorative glazing bars. Above the pediment, the words 'POST OFFICE' are displayed in relief white lettering. The far right ground floor window extends down to ground level at its center and incorporates a clockface set into its upper sash. There is a deep wooden eaves cornice adorned with dentils.
Many original internal fittings are preserved on the ground floor, including polychrome tiled flooring, mahogany panelling, and counters. The service counter, which originally ran the length of the ground floor, has been repurposed to span the width. Service hatches and doorways leading to sorting offices remain, along with the GPO mahogany clock.
