Description

The Church of St Mary and St Mercurius is a chapel built in the Romanesque style, featuring a gable end facade. It is constructed from red and beige roughly dressed sandstone, with cream ashlar used decoratively for architectural details. The roof is made of artificial slate with ashlar coping. The central three bays are framed by pilasters and bracketed antae that extend diagonally to the apex, which is topped by a short bellcote with an embattled cornice.

The two upper-storey pilasters rise from the doorway cornice and separate the three long, round-headed windows, which have long nook shafts, simple fluted capitals, and an impost band. Above the central window is a datestone featuring a shield under a round-arched hood. The central entrance slightly projects forward and includes a wide moulded round-arched doorway with voussoirs and an impost band, leading to recessed boarded double doors. On each side of the entrance are small round-headed windows that connect with the continuous impost band. Each side also has bays with smaller entrance doorways and similar round-headed windows above, with end pilasters that complete the vertical design. The windows feature some decorative glazing in cool colours, predominantly blue, green, and mauve. The rendered five-bay side elevation has round-arched windows with chamfered surrounds, separated by pilasters with offsets, and the glazing has been renewed. An attached rear wing, which was formerly a Sunday School, retains its Welsh slate roof and ventilators.

Inside, the chapel has been partly converted for Coptic Orthodox liturgical use. It features an unusual aisled roof structure with wooden trusses rising from posts set on very tall slender marbled columns with Corinthian-derived capitals, which support the high round arches of a wooden arcade. The ceiling is painted and boarded. There is a wide moulded reredos arch and a gallery at the rear with a curved and panelled front. Pews are retained on both floors. The vestibule includes glazed panels for the partition and swing doors with quarry glazing that incorporates Art Nouveau motifs.
