Description
The Former Risca Collieries Workmen's Institute is a purpose-built workmen's institute designed in a simple Jacobethan style. Constructed from red brick with some blue brick and ashlar dressings, it features a Welsh slate roof adorned with decorative terracotta ridge tiles. The hipped roof has overhanging eaves, two large ventilators, finials, and is stepped up to the right to accommodate a wing.
The building has a near-symmetrical frontage facing St Mary Street and consists of two storeys. The central bay projects forward in a tall gabled porch style, with the first floor showcasing tall paired rounded-headed lights with quarry glazing beneath a hoodmould, flanked by narrow side windows. Above these is a cornice featuring a datestone in the pediment gable, while below is a wide inscription panel that extends around the returns. The ground floor features a round-headed arched doorway with three projecting keystones and imposts, along with side arched openings; however, what appears to be a door set back beneath is actually a window. Each side bay has two 9-pane windows on the first floor with stepped surrounds, and cambered-headed 12-pane windows on the ground floor with hoodmoulds, continuing the band from the inscription panel.
The rear elevation steps forward twice and has a hipped roof that sweeps over the rear wing, with most windows featuring blue brick voussoirs. The garden-facing elevation includes the main side doorway, which has a round-headed arch and a large keystone, a part-glazed door, and an oval motif in the hoodmould. The other roadside-facing side elevation is two bays wide and has a small modern extension above the doorway, which includes a cornice hood, chamfered surround, and a 4-pane overlight.
Inside, the building retains much of its original layout, although there are few furnishings. The ground floor has been converted into an industrial museum, while the upstairs contains a meeting room and offices. A staircase with turned balusters and heavy newel posts is located at the rear.
