Description

59 Garden Suburbs is part of a short, asymmetrical terrace of single-storey and attic houses, built with two-window fronts. The design features distinctive gables and a tall rubble chimney stack on the left end (No 63), resembling a sub-medieval lateral chimney, along with square ridge stacks on Nos 59 and 61. The houses are mostly pebbledashed, but the larger gabled bays of Nos 57 and 61 are constructed of rubble, with split-stone kneelers on No. 61 and large stone lintels. The remaining attic windows on the fronts of Nos 59 and 63 are set beneath small gables. Nos 59 and 61 are separated by a buttress. The roofs have been replaced with concrete tiles and artificial slate but still feature overhanging eaves. Originally, the houses had 2 and 3-light leaded casement glazing, but none remains; No 61 has a bracketed hooded doorway. The gable end of No 63 includes a projecting rubble wing that is asymmetrically gabled, with wide bracketed eaves and ramped buttresses, all in a strong Arts and Crafts style. There was originally an archway connecting Nos 57 to 63 with the adjacent block of Nos 65 to 71, which is why the road between them is named Arch Hill. At the rear, the terrace showcases tall twinned gables in the center, a full-height broad stone gable on No 57, and a small gable with swept eaves on No 63. An added porch is also present.
