Description
Nos 57-63 Garden Suburbs is a short, asymmetrical terrace of single-storey and attic houses, each featuring two-window fronts. The design is notable for its gables and the tall rubble chimney stack on the left end (No 63), resembling a sub-medieval lateral chimney, along with square ridge stacks on Nos 59 and 61. The houses are mostly pebbledashed, but the larger gabled bays of Nos 57 and 61 are made of rubble, with split-stone kneelers on No. 61 and large stone lintels. The remaining attic windows on the front of Nos 59 and 63 are set under small gables. Nos 59 and 61 are separated by a buttress. The roofs have been replaced with concrete tiles and artificial slate but still feature overhanging eaves. Originally, there were 2 and 3-light leaded casement windows, but none remain. No 61 has a bracketed hooded doorway. The gable end of No 63 has a projecting rubble wing that is asymmetrically gabled, with wide bracketed eaves and ramped buttresses, all in a strong Arts and Crafts style. There was originally an archway linking Nos 57 to 63 with the adjacent block Nos 65 to 71, which is why the road between them is named Arch Hill. At the rear, the terrace has tall twinned gables in the center, a full-height broad stone gable on No 57, and a small gable with swept eaves on No 63. An added hood is present over the entrance doorway.
