Description

This is a short asymmetrical terrace of seven single-storey and attic houses, numbered 57 to 63, built in the 1920s as part of the Garden Suburb development. The design is notable for its varied gables and prominent chimney stacks. The end house, number 63, features a tall rubble chimney stack reminiscent of a sub-medieval lateral chimney. Numbers 59 and 61 have square ridge stacks. The front elevations are mostly pebbledashed, while the larger, advanced gabled bays of numbers 57 and 61 are constructed of rubble, with split-stone kneelers to number 61 and large stone lintels. Small gables shelter the attic windows of number 59 and 63. A buttress separates houses 59 and 61. The roofs are now covered with concrete tiles and artificial slate, but retain overhanging eaves. The original windows were leaded casement windows with 2 or 3 lights, but none of these remain. A bracketed, hooded doorway is present at number 61. The gable end of number 63 has a projecting rubble wing in a strongly Arts and Crafts style, with wide bracketed eaves and ramped buttresses. Originally, an archway connected numbers 57 to 63 with the adjacent houses 65 to 71; this feature led to the road between the blocks being named Arch Hill. The rear elevations have tall twinned gables at the centre, a full-height broad stone gable to number 57, and a small gable with swept eaves to number 63.
