71 Garden Suburbs

Nos 65-71 Garden Suburbs is a short terrace of single-storey and attic houses, each featuring two-window fronts. The design is notable for its gables and tall rubble chimney stacks at each end, resembling sub-medieval lateral chimneys, along with square ridge stacks at Nos 67 and 69. The houses are mostly pebbledashed, but the larger advanced gabled bays at Nos 67 and 71 are constructed of rubble, with split-stone kneelers at No. 67 and large stone lintels. The remaining attic windows at the front are set under small gables. The roofs are covered with concrete tiles and have overhanging eaves. Originally, the houses had two and three-light leaded casement windows, but these have now been replaced. Nos 65 and 67 feature hooded doorways, while No 71 has a round-headed arched doorway. No 71 also includes a single-storey wing on the left, similar to No 57 in the adjacent block. The gable end of No 65 has a projecting rubble bay that is asymmetrically gabled, with wide bracketed eaves and ramped buttresses, all reflecting a strong Arts and Crafts style. Originally, there was an archway connecting Nos 65 to 71 with the adjacent block Nos 57 to 63, which is why the road between the two is named Arch Hill. At the rear, the houses display tall twinned gables at the center, a full-height broad stone gable at No 71, and a small gable with swept eaves at No 65.
