Description

Shangri La is a detached house built in a Streamline Moderne style. The house dates to the mid-20th century and is constructed of brick, primarily rendered, with an exposed brick plinth. It has a flat roof with deeply overhanging eaves to the front, and one chimney stack to the left. The front facade is double-fronted, but not symmetrical. The left side features a two-storey semi-circular bay with metal-framed windows extending across the curve on each floor. The central bay is straight at the front, then curves to the side. Between the two bays is a recessed entrance with a part-glazed front door, flanked by windows. A metal-railed balcony above the door serves as a porch hood. To the left, a single-storey garage has been converted, incorporating a flat roof and a balcony, with a swimming pool-style ladder leading to the main flat roof. A flat-roofed rear kitchen block was altered in 2016 by the addition of a first-floor bathroom extension, squaring off the block.

The interior retains the original layout, with the exception of a partition that was removed to enlarge the kitchen. Rooms lead off a central hall and staircase, which features ramped balusters to the rear. A tall arched window on the stairway displays stained glass depicting a sunburst over the sea, reputedly added in the 1950s. Original woodblock floors are preserved beneath modern tiles. The garage has been converted into a sunroom, featuring a large west-facing window and a door providing internal access to the lounge.
