Description
The Pioneer Hotel is a large hotel built in the early 20th century, designed in an Arts and Crafts-derived style. It is constructed of well-jointed random rubble, with rockfaced quoins, some areas rendered and painted, some roughcast, and some brick. The roof is covered in Welsh slate. Most windows retain their original glazing, consisting primarily of horned sashes with a multipane upper half and plate-glazed lower half.
The asymmetrical frontage spans three storeys. A tall, gabled bay on the left side displays a variety of textures – rubble, render, and roughcast – with wide pilasters that splay outwards at the base. Just below a roughcast pediment is a wide six-light multipane window. At first-floor level, a wide elliptical-arched four-light window with wide mullions and transoms features faint lettering reading "Pioneer Hotel" beneath. A ground-floor four-light window to the bar area has a different style of divided glazing, with two small panes and one large pane below the transom. A deep, round-arched hood shelters the main doorway, which has double half-glazed doors and a multipane overlight. A single window range is set back and down to the side, with a three-light window on the first floor beneath overhanging eaves. Two small four-pane sashes are located beside the second doorway.
To the right, at the centre, the roof slopes down, incorporating two dormers with gabled roofs and louvred windows above multipane casements. The right-hand end has a three-storey gabled bay with paired windows on each floor, with the right corners chamfered to accommodate a side window at first-floor level under overhanging eaves. The central right side features an entrance bay with a canted three-window bay on the first floor, positioned above an elliptical arched recess forming a splayed porch with double doors and a multipane overlight, covered by a bracketed hood. A single window and a narrow second doorway are separated by a two-storey canted bay with a parapet rising above eaves level. Similar bar windows are located on the ground floor either side of the entrance.
The side elevation to the right includes wide red brick pilasters and window dressings, with moulded brick sills. The roof has an unequal pitch, which is higher at the rear. To accommodate this slope, the rear of the hotel rises to four storeys. The left-side elevation also displays an unequal roof pitch and lacks windows except for those in the attic. Attached to the front is a wall with tall railings featuring decorative curled finials on the stanchions.
Much of the original layout remains, although not all of the original fittings are present. Surviving features include a heavy, polished wood bar, a brick and tile fireplace, partially glazed swing doors, engraved glass in the bar windows, moulded window surrounds, and a dado rail.
