Description
Maes Manor Hotel
A small Tudor-Gothic style country house of two storeys with attic, comprising an entrance range of 1900 oriented east-west, a south-west wing of 1907, a parallel north-west service wing, and a walled service yard of 1900 to the west, now roofed. The building is constructed of coursed rock-faced stone with lighter freestone dressings and a slate roof with overhanging eaves.
The entrance range has a stone stack to the right, while the south-west wing has two similar end stacks. Windows throughout are stone mullioned with hood moulds and incorporate casements with leaded lights. Original rainwater goods are retained, with dated heads of 1900 to the entrance range and 1907 to the south-west wing.
The south front of the entrance range has a gabled bay to an asymmetrical two-bay elevation, with the wider bay carried above the eaves and having a coped verge on moulded kneelers. The entrance range incorporates the original entrance in the narrower left-hand bay, which features a shallow single-storey porch with coped parapet. The original doorway on the right side is round-headed beneath a deep corbelled hood and has an inserted window. A former window to its left now has an inserted door. In the upper storey is a three-light window beneath a gable with a small attic window. The wider right-hand gabled bay has a two-storey canted bay window incorporating cross windows and a small hooded attic window in the gable.
The south-west wing's wider right-hand bay features a two-storey canted bay window with cross windows and a hooded attic window. The left-hand bay has three-light windows with transom in the lower storey and a small attic window. The left (south) end wall of the south-west wing has an external flue flanked by two-light windows with transoms in the lower storey. It is extended left by an integral single bay under a hipped roof, which has inserted double doors in the lower storey and a three-light transomed upper-storey window beneath a gable.
The right (east) gable end of the entrance range has an external stack, a cross window lower left, two-light windows upper right and left, and an inserted doorway to the right, now the main entrance. The rear of the entrance range has segmental-headed upper-storey windows with wooden mullions and transoms. It features two coped gables carried above the eaves with three-light windows; to the right of these is a cross window below a raised parapet and flat-roofed dormer, all above a single-storey flat-roofed projection. A small two-light window is to the left. Further right is the parallel north-west rendered service wing with a flat-roofed north projection.
The west gable end of the entrance range, above the covered service yard, has segmental-headed casement windows to the upper storey. The west side wall of the south-west wing, also facing the covered service yard, has a gabled projection with a three-light upper-storey window and two-light attic window, and an apex ball finial. To its right is a tall stone eaves stack.
The walled service yard has an original splayed entrance on the north side and curved north-west and south-west corners. On the west side is a drinking trough in the form of a stone basin beneath a keyed round arch. A single-storey hipped-roof projection is on the south side of the service yard, abutting and projecting in front of the south-west wing.
The porch leads into a stair hall with an open-well stair comprising turned balusters and square newels with ball finials. To its left is the south-west wing, now a single room, with two fireplaces. Both have classical chimneypieces comprising a stone surround with Ionic pilasters and a wood-panelled surround.
