Description
The headframe and pithead at Tower Colliery is a significant industrial structure. The headframe features four splayed supports, with two shear legs positioned towards the winder. These are connected to the verticals by two horizontal struts and two right-angle struts. There are steps along the southern shear leg leading up to a platform at the top, which provides access to the two sheaves. Internally, the headframe is boxed in with steel plates to prevent air from being drawn into the shaft, as this serves as the upcast shaft for the colliery. The pit top is enclosed by an irregular single-storey brick building situated between the legs of the frame. This building includes air lock doors for the entry of materials and personnel to the shaft top, along with tall multi-pane metal framed windows.
