Description
Hirwaun war memorial clock tower is an Art-Nouveau influenced structure built in three stages, constructed from coursed rock-faced 'Shaddris' stone with ashlar 'Patent Empire Stone' dressings and an upper stage. It features a swept pyramidal slate roof with bracketed eaves and a lead finial. The lower two stages are supported by diagonal buttresses, which are made of ashlar and adorned with scroll enrichment at the offsets. The front and side faces of the lower stage display metal plaques featuring marginal interlace ornament and a roll of honour in raised letters for the First and Second World Wars. At the rear, there is a doorway framed with a dressed surround and a keyed tripartite lintel, topped by a balustrade, with a steel door. The second stage includes narrow openings with louvres on a corbelled apron, each topped with a segmental arch. The upper stage features round clock faces on the front and sides, while the rear has a blind round panel.
