Description

The building is a public library constructed of red brick in mainly Flemish bond, with terracotta details and a Welsh slate roof that is rendered on the sides. It features a double gable front. On the first floor, there are a pair of Venetian windows with moulded terracotta surrounds that include a keystone and moulded sill, although the glazing has been replaced. Between these windows is a small moulded blind window. Above, there are two stepped gables topped with heavy moulded corniced finials, each surmounted by orbs and narrow louvred lights in the apex.

The ground floor is notable for four terracotta caryatids positioned on moulded pilasters and brackets that support large consoles; two caryatids are located at each end and two are on either side of the main central entrance, which features a moulded black marble surround. The lower front courses of the brickwork and the fascia and glazing have been replaced. To the right, there is a flat-roofed wing that includes a pair of segmental arched doorways with moulded terracotta surrounds and a cornice above, along with one ground floor and two upper floor windows that also have terracotta surrounds with dripmoulds and keystones; the doors and glazing in this section have been replaced as well. The interior of the library has been recently refurbished.
