Description

Forest Hill Public Library is a public library built in 1900 by Alexander Robert Hennell in the Arts and Crafts Classical style. The building is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with terracotta dressings and a slate roof featuring a terracotta and brick banded chimney. The right side contains administrative accommodation, while the library is located on the left. The right section has a projecting gable with a 12-pane sash window topped by a curved pediment and brackets, along with an octagonal cupola with a lead roof.

A deep terracotta frieze runs across the front of the building, depicting cherubs kneeling with floral swags and blank shields. Below this, there are two circular windows with keystones at the corners. On the first floor under the gable, there are two 12-pane sashes with curved heads, and on the ground floor, a large Venetian window features an Art Nouveau lily motif in the glazing. The basement includes a Diocletian window with a large keystone, and the ground floor is banded with terracotta.

The left side features a doorcase with a massive terracotta cornice on brackets, leading up a flight of steps with terracotta balustrading. The one-storey library to the left has contemporary lettering reading "PUBLIC LIBRARY." Its front has a round-headed window with a keystone, flanked by tall windows that also have original Art Nouveau lily motif glazing, and a terracotta cornice. The side elevation displays six round-headed windows with keystones and lily glazing. The roof includes a hipped skylight with 14 fixed leaded lights divided by wooden pilasters and a single doorcase.

Inside, the library features double doors and a round-headed arched doorcase with lily glazing. The interior includes pillars and large brackets, with a series of six round-headed arches on each side.
