Description

The Church of St John is a Grade II listed building designed in the Early English Gothic style. It is constructed of rock-faced, occasionally snecked sandstone with ashlar dressings. The church features a deep and wide single span roof, now covered with artificial slate, which includes the base of a former fleche. The nave, chancel, and north and south aisles are all covered by this roof.

At the northeast corner, there is a double cross-gabled vestry wing that is two stories high due to the sloping ground, and it has an enclosed stone flight of steps leading to its door. The west vestibule has an outshut with moulded pointed arched entrance doorways at both ends. The church predominantly has two or three light windows with simple lancets or geometric tracery, interspersed with slim but deep buttresses on the south and north sides. The east and west windows feature more decorative geometric tracery, and there are small triple lancets in the gable apexes. The northern boundary wall of the churchyard is made of rubble sandstone and is topped with decorative iron railings and gates, with steps leading east and west.

Inside, the church has unusual timber nave aisle arcades made of painted wood, featuring octagonal piers that support transverse arches and elaborately pierced spandrels. The wide and high chancel arch is adorned with a wooden 'Insole' screen from 1909, which has a heavily carved and painted bressumer. The pulpit is also notable, made of painted stone and incorporating carved putti and saints in roundels. The stained glass windows include works by Kempe and the Tower studio.
