Description

Cymmer Independent Chapel, also known as Hen Capel Y Cymmer, is a 2-storey stone-built chapel featuring a slate roof and stone end chimney stacks. The main front, which has four windows and is constructed of rubble, showcases a traditional design that runs parallel to the road. It includes entrances on either side of the central windows, differing from the gable-fronted chapels that became common from the mid-19th century onwards. The round-headed windows, now boarded up, are adorned with dressed stone voussoirs and sills. The tall central windows flank the pulpit inside, while the higher-set outer windows illuminate the gallery. Historical photographs reveal that these windows originally had simple, square-pane glazing. The chapel has square-headed nine-panel doors with dressed stone lintels. A central stone date plaque at gallery level reads: 'Cymmer a Adeiladwyd ar y Flwyddyn 1743 ac a ail Adeiladwyd ar y Flwyddyn 1834'. The gable ends feature one window each, with the right side cement-rendered and having a horned sash window, while the left side displays brick dressings. The rear has stone voussoirs with additional horned sash windows.

Inside, the chapel has a simple rectangular layout with a three-sided raked gallery that has panelled fronts and chamfered timber piers. There is no lobby at the front, but a separate door leads up to the gallery. The pulpit is situated between the main front windows and is backed by an open-pedimented timber board with fluted pilasters; the platform is equipped with balustraded handrails. The chapel contains 19th-century pews with hinged backs.
