Description
Bronwydd House is a large, exuberant, red brick and ashlar house with a Welsh slate roof, dating from the 18th century. It is set within a garden. The main facade has three main storeys and a cellar, and comprises three bays. The central recessed bay features a semicircular portico with six enriched composite columns and two attached pilasters that support a balcony with a carved frieze and decorative iron railings. The portico’s floor is of semi-circular mosaic, with moulded stone steps leading to a marble step and an elaborate entrance consisting of glazed and panelled double doors, decorated side lights, and an overlight. Above the entrance are three rectangular windows with lugged architraves, decorative glazing bars, and coloured glass overlights. At eaves level is a large gabled dormer with prominent kneelers and quoins, a moulded cornice, two pilasters, and a round arch surrounding a round headed coloured glass window. To the left is a broad, six-sided, two-storey bay, with floors separated by a heavily moulded string course and six windows to each floor. The lower windows are tall and rectangular, featuring heavy transoms and mullions, and coloured glass upper lights. The upper windows are round-headed with carved spandrels. It has a very richly moulded parapet with swag motifs, and above this is a two-storey tapering circular turret with six urns on the cornice, round headed lights above, curved scroll brackets supporting a bell-shaped cap with an orbed finial, a moulded string course, prominent quoins, and a plinth. To the right is a two-storey bay of five rectangular windows on each floor, the lower with segmental arched coloured glass top lights, and the upper with semicircular arches. There is a very richly moulded parapet with cartouches and a keyed oculus in the gable. The windows throughout have glazing bars only in the upper portions of the main lights.
In front of the house is a raised curved terrace with a stone balustrade and moulded coping. Stone piers with urns flank a splayed flight of five steps with nosings.
The right elevation reveals further bays and balustraded entrance steps leading to decorative glazed double doors and decorative wall tiles within the porch. The roof displays a complex interlocking of gables. A 20th-century office extension is located at the rear and has no particular architectural interest.
Despite conversion to offices, much of the original fitting visibly survives, though some are masked by linings and partitions. The hall retains heavily moulded plasterwork, a restored black and white marble floor, richly moulded doorcases, six-panel doors, swing doors with engraved glass, wall panelling, a wide wooden staircase with moulded balusters and bronze figures, a coloured glass staircase window, moulded plaster ceiling, and coving. Many rooms retain fireplaces with tiles, ceiling mouldings, window glazing with coloured glass in the lights, panelled doors including fittings and surrounds, and dado rails. Extensive stone and brick cellars are also present.
