Description
The loggia at Craig-y-parc, along with its attached terrace walls and steps, is a Grade II* listed structure. This open loggia resembles a small barn or byre and is constructed from stone rubble with a deep hipped stone-tiled roof. At each end, there is a short stretch of masonry with offsets, flanked by six slender Doric columns made of limestone. To the north, the wall returns to create a garden entrance featuring lattice panels and a stone-tiled roof, similar to the section in the front courtyard. To the south, the structure extends to form a garden wall made of roughly dressed, deliberately random masonry that is barely mortared. This wall curves around a terraced recess and decreases in height to border a short angled flight of steps at the end of the terrace. Another matching flight of steps descends from the terraced recess, following a similar curve.
Inside, the loggia is characterized by a heavy, intricate timber-framed roof comprising seven bays, supported by massive tie beams, king posts, struts, collars, braces, closely set rafters, and two rows of purlins. The masonry is designed to give the impression of a building that has developed over centuries, featuring stones of various sizes and types, small niches, corbels, patching, including the tile-stitching popular for masonry repairs at the time, and a series of relief shields displaying coats of arms. In the center, there is a low fireplace with a semi-circular arch, end-on tiled voussoirs, a prominent keystone, a semi-circular kerb, and an iron fire basket and back, dated 1743 from the Taff Vale Foundry. The floor is flagged.
