Description
The Railway Overbridge is a Grade II listed triple portal masonry bridge, featuring wharfside paths alongside a wide canal opening. It has a central segmental arch made of bullnosed voussoirs, which are stepped on the upper side, and is constructed with coursed facings and plain cappings. The outer bays project slightly forward and have semi-circular arch rings. The convex and battered revetment wall on the south side sweeps forward to meet an outer pier set into the embankment.
The ground level has risen significantly at the arches, but the left-hand opening retains 19th-century railings and tapered polygonal ironwork piers, which are stamped with "Baylis and Co." These lead to a wide pedestrian gate that features punched Gothic detailing on the hinge plate. There are remnants of railings at the right-hand arch. The eastern side, facing Collingdon Road, appears similar but is partially obscured by a later widening of the railway, which includes a bow-shaped plated girder bridge. The bridge was heavily overgrown at the time of inspection in autumn 1997.
