Description
Cardiff Bridge is a structure featuring reinforced concrete arches supported by rusticated stone piers, adorned with Portland stone balustrades and decorative elements. It has four elliptically faced arches with projecting cutwaters that rise as piers, supporting a deep cornice and an open balustrade with five panels for each arch. Atop each pier stands a square obelisk of Cenotaph type, which once held bronze flambeaux. There is a cast bronze inscription at the west end stating, 'Cardiff Bridge opened 1931. George Whitaker City Engineer. J. M. Beresford Contractor'. The soffit of each arch is ribbed reinforced concrete situated above the stonework, which shows clear signs of widening from its original design of 1859. This bridge is located in the Castle Community.
