Description

The Westgate Public House is a building constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring Portland stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It showcases a balanced corner neo-Georgian style design with a segmental corner that contains the main entrance, and it has nearly identical frontages facing Cowbridge Road East and Lower Cathedral Road. The facade is arranged in a pattern of 1:4:1:4:1 bays, with the single bays slightly recessed and framed by quoins. Notable architectural details include a stone plinth, quoins, bands, keystones, and door surrounds.

The entrance bay features a large doorway with a moulded frame and bracketed head, a rectangular fanlight with sunrise tracery, and a large projecting lantern above. This entrance is flanked by 4 over 4 pane sash windows, with a 6 over 6 pane sash window located above. The four window bays on the ground floor have keyed 9 over 9 pane sashes, while the upper level has 6 over 6 pane sashes with rubbed heads. The fourth bay facing Lower Cathedral Road has a plain doorway with a fanlight instead of a window. The end bays each have a doorway with a moulded surround and fanlight; the one facing Cowbridge Road East has a 4 over 6 pane sash above, while the one on Lower Cathedral Road features a cart entrance that has been filled with a multi-pane window and a 4 over 6 pane sash above it. The building has a steeply sloped roof with overhanging eaves and three tall brick stacks topped with weathered stone caps.

During the recent survey, only the ground floor was accessible. This area has been opened up into a single bar space from previously separate rooms, but the original room shapes and planning remain intact, along with plastered ceiling beams and dentil cornices.
