Description

The Bonded Warehouse is a four-storey building, six bays wide and three bays deep, constructed on an iron framework and faced with orange-red brick in English Bond. It features some dressings in bathstone and a grey stone plinth on the sides and rear. The hipped roof is covered with modern corrugated material, and there is a parapet with bathstone capping.

Facing Bute East Dock, the warehouse has six bays, with the second and fifth bays featuring tall loading bays equipped with hoists above. The former doors now have office glazing and wrought-iron balconies, while the other bays contain small round-headed windows with bathstone keystones and sills, fitted with modern single-pane glazing. Each floor has four cast iron tie-rod ends. The ground floor, which faces the dock, is open to almost half the depth of the building, providing a covered working area, with modern office glazing at the rear. The overhang is supported by broad Tuscan-style cast-iron columns that carry a cast-iron beam, upon which the masonry rests.

The east and west elevations are similar to the south elevation, featuring three bays above the ground floor, with a central loading bay flanked by round-headed windows and cast iron tie-rod ends. The ground floor is open to the south but has brickwork to the north. The north elevation has two windows on each upper floor to the right. A modern extension in red brick and glass to the left, resulting from the conversion to offices, covers the loading bay and other windows.

Although converted to offices, the building retains its original construction, including cast-iron Tuscan columns that support parallel iron beams spanned by shallow brick arches.
