Description

The Masonic Temple is a Grade II listed building featuring a Bath Stone facade with round-arched openings that have keystones and a decorative order of Doric pilasters. It has a cornice and parapet inscribed with "MASONIC TEMPLE" and a hipped slate roof. The structure consists of three bays, with a triple arch window above a blocked doorway in the center and tall arched windows on either side.

The main entrance is located at the side of the former chapel, leading into a long passage that takes you to the hall, which is supported by Ionic columns and features a cantilevered staircase with a wrought-iron balustrade adorned with symbolic roundels. The building includes three temples: the main temple is the Grand or Duke of Connaught Temple situated in the old chapel, characterized by a lofty coved ceiling, moulded architraves around blocked windows, and wooden paneling on the lower walls, complete with stepped platforms for seating. At the far end of the chapel, there is a gallery with a panelled frontal and an organ that was installed in 1906, replacing an earlier one.

The Small or Lord Swansea Temple is accessed via an ante-room from the main hall and is located behind the main temple within the chapel building. The New or Edgar Rutter Temple can be reached from the opposite corner of the hall. On the first floor, there are three dining rooms. Dining Room 1, situated above the Lord Swansea Temple, retains a large decorative cupola and a stage area, while additional dining rooms are located above the Edgar Rutter Temple (No 2) and a central dining room (No 3).
