Description

The New Theatre is a building constructed of red brick with bathstone dressings, featuring painted side wings. It has a curved corner block that stands three storeys high, flanked by polygonal turrets topped with octagonal cupolas and volutes. The building is crowned with a balustraded parapet and a modillion cornice above a second-floor colonnade supported by paired Ionic columns in antis. The façade includes three windows on the second and first floors, each with entablatures, and three doorways with two flanking windows on the ground floor.

Facing Greyfriars' Road, the theatre has two bays and a lower section with dormers and fifteen windows at the first-floor level. A fire exit doorway features a bracketed pedimented hood. The wing facing Park Place is three storeys high and constructed in painted brick.

Inside, the auditorium boasts a square-headed and panelled proscenium arch, with two bays of tiered boxes on each side, adorned with giant Ionic pilasters and entablatures. The balcony fronts of the upper boxes are moulded in the shape of a scroll, while the lower boxes have panelled and balustraded balcony fronts. The Front Circle and Upper Circle feature curved and panelled balcony fronts. The auditorium ceiling is divided into two large plaster panels, decorated with modillions, with the panel over the larger section of the auditorium showcasing four gilded wreathes and a central rose. The theatre also includes a circular foyer.
