Description

This is a large, three-story, eight-bay public house, The Heathcock PH, incorporating number 62, built in an urban Georgian style. The exterior is rendered with smooth dressings and features a slate roof with deep eaves supported by bracketed consoles (with full console brackets surviving on the left side), crested ridge tiles, and brick chimney stacks. The first floor has sixteen-pane sash windows within moulded architraves, each with a keystone and projecting cornice that runs continuously across the first two and third windows. A continuous string course connects these windows. The second floor also has sixteen-pane sash windows with a continuous string course, and shouldered architraves on three windows to the right.

The ground floor has been altered. Quoins are visible on the left side, and a tripartite sash window is set within a raised surround with a cornice in the first bay. A door is located in the second and fifth bays, flanking a tripartite sash window, all linked by a continuous cornice with console brackets supporting both doors. The right-hand bays are separated by a full-height pilaster strip. Originally, the central door was flanked by windows with raised surrounds and cornices, but the window to the right has since been converted into a door with a narrow flanking window. The plinth rises with the ground level.

The interior has not been inspected but may retain the original layout and constructional or decorative features which contribute to the building’s special interest.
