Description
The Former North Lodge to Rookwood House is a building constructed of red and brown Radyr stone, featuring yellow and red brickwork arranged in bands and patterns, along with half-timbering and red tiled roofs, some of which include scalloped tiles. The tall polygonal chimneys are made of red brick.
On the west elevation, which faces the drive, there is an elaborate gable that projects boldly over the ground floor to the right. This gable has deeply projecting bargeboards with arch-bracing and is adorned with red and yellow brick, banding, zig-zags, and a relieving arch, as well as half-timbering. A three-light casement window is flanked by mosaic panels, which appear to be a 1920 alteration. This section is supported by wooden posts that create two bays of a verandah, which features a splayed bay window on the ground floor. A wooden balustrade surrounds the verandah, although three bays to the left have been glazed. Above, to the left, there is a gabled dormer made of yellow brick and half-timbering, which contains a two-light window.
The south elevation has a slightly projecting first-floor gable made of yellow brick and half-timbering. The deep eaves of the gable are shaped into a trefoil and pierced by a star, with a cruciform casement window. The stone ground floor has no openings, and there is a polygonal brick chimney to the left.
On the east elevation, made of stone, there is a Gothic doorway with yellow brick dressings, a two-light casement window to the right, and a slit window to the left. A late 20th-century addition in yellow brick features a three-light casement window and a tiled lean-to roof to the left. Above this addition, to the left, there is a gable made of yellow brick and half-timbering. To the right, there is a boarded door under a lean-to.
The north elevation features a yellow brick half-timbered gable with a three-light casement window, along with another door located under a tiled roof.
The interior was not seen during the resurvey.
