Town Walls

The Town Walls are a Grade II* listed structure made of stone rubble, standing about 3.5 metres high on average, though they likely once reached approximately 7.6 metres and included an internal walkway. The walls in the Butts area are castellated and feature a bastion at the southwest angle, which is circular in plan with a polygonal upper storey. This bastion was probably used as a summer-house during the post-medieval period. There is a doorway leading to gardens south of the Mason's Arms, facing the gardens, which includes an inner retaining wall that is turfed. To the east of the bastion, the walls have two doorways: a round-headed doorway to the west and a doorway with a Tudor head to the east. Additionally, to the north, facing the gardens, there are stone rubble gate piers with moulded copings. The walls extend to the west as garden walls, built on the foundations of medieval walls.
