Description
The Pavilions at Cold Knap Park are a pair of concrete open structures designed in a Classical style, set into the bank with staircases that lead down from the promenade to the boating lake. Each pavilion features eight forward bays, separated by single Tuscan columns, with three columns at the corners. The open side bays end with one and a half columns against the rear wall. The pavilions have an architrave and cornice but no frieze. The flat roof creates a wide platform that extends into the park from the promenade, enclosed by concrete balustrading on three sides, with thirteen vase-shaped balusters for each bay, separated by cuboid posts. The East Pavilion has twelve balusters in the rear bays, while the West Pavilion has thirteen. Aside from this difference, the two pavilions are largely identical.
There are three flights of stairs leading from the promenade to a mid-level in front of the pavilions, followed by five shorter flights down to the Marine Lake. The additional flights are located at the midpoint of the pavilions and do not have balustrades. The remaining balustrades on the three main flights are made of rough concrete blocks with smooth tops that curve down between posts, which have pyramidal tops. There are five posts on each side of the upper flights and three posts on each side of the shorter lower flights.
